On August 23, in an interview with Dr. Anthony Fauci, Fox’s Neil Cavuto asked whether school closures had caused “forever damage” to children. Fauci replied, “I don’t think it’s ever irreparably damaged anyone.”
If only that were true. But a large body of accumulating evidence contradicts Fauci’s rosy claims. Moreover, not only have millions of children been harmed by school closures, but worse, those shutdowns will shorten their lives. Keeping schools open would have saved lives. School closures lead to loss of learning, which leads to long-term loss of income, which in turn can lead to lost and shortened lives.

Other estimates shorten life due to school closures at much higher levels. Dimitri A. A paper by Christakis, Will Van Cleave, and Frederick J. Zimmerman Journal of the American Medical Association An estimated 13.8 million years of life were lost due to school closures. This number was estimated from a standard analytic model that examines the association between school closures and reduced educational attainment and reduced educational attainment and life expectancy. It was based on data from the CDC, the Social Security Administration, and the US Census Bureau. Dividing the 13.8 million years of life lost by a normal life expectancy of 78 years in the United States indicates that the equivalent of about 177,000 deaths was attributable to school closures.
Economists often use the term “invisible graveyards” to refer to such deaths. It is believed that these deaths have not yet been identified, but will occur in the future. This is a tragic outcome regardless of whether we see them in their corpses.
